“People are not mirrors – they don’t see you how you see yourself.”

I read Sometimes I Lie in the summer. All psychological thrillers mess with your head, that’s what we expect, but Alice Feeney has taken a step further with Sometimes I Lie.  A clever, compelling novel, it is already one of my favorite reads of 2018.

Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move, she can’t speak and she can’t open her eyes. She can, however, hear everyone around her. But they have no idea. Amber can’t remember what happened but she has a suspicion her husband has something to do with it. Alternating between Amber’s comatose present, the week before her accident and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago. Sometimes I Lie asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it’s the truth?

The plot sizzles. It’s electrifying and intriguing. A woman in a coma. Secrets. A past that impacts the present. Loyalties. Dysfunctional, damaged and screwed up characters that I loved to love then loved to despise. I thought Sometimes I Lie was good from the start but by the ending it propelled into the brilliance category.

Feeney constantly keeps the reader on tenterhooks with jaw-dropping twists, unpredictable characters and a racy plot. Sometimes I Lie is an electrifying tale of madness, murder and deceit. It will not leave your thoughts for a long time.  This fast- paced novel has an unreliable narrator. It is narrated in the first person by Amber. Sometimes I Lie is divided into 3 parts- Amber’s comatose state, the week leading up to her accident and through childhood diaries from twenty years back. The plot of Sometimes I Lie is intriguing, original and gripping. It will constantly keep you guessing.

Sometimes I Lie is a domestic thriller with a superb twist in the end. I wish there were more thrillers like this novel. It is both a an addictive psychological thriller and beautifully written. Crime fiction readers should definitely add Sometimes I Lie to their TBR list of 2018 ASAP!!!

For fans of dark, twisted thrillers- This is the ONE!
